What is Toastmasters?

Toastmasters international is a non-profit educational corporation with a mission to improve communication and leadership skills.

May I observe without joining?

Yes, you're welcome to observe us three times before making a decision to join us.

How can I benefit from joining this club?

Your observation, listening, and presentation skills will be refined. Your confidence, ability to evaluate, manage, and lead a group will develop naturally every time you participate in a meeting. Start your week with humour, inspiration and a positive attitude.

What materials are provided to me?

Upon joining you will receive your Communication and Leadership Program which has 10 speech projects each designed to develop your speaking skills one step at a time.

What happens at a standard meeting?

You will hear 4 two minute impromptu table topics speeches related to the theme of the day and 3 prepared speeches from the Communication and Leadership Program.

What are Table Topics?

You will build quick thinking skills as you give 2 minute impromptu speeches on general subjects. Table Topics is spontaneous and laced with humour.

What speech projects are there for me to work on?

Icebreaker, Organize your speech, Get to the point, How to say it, Your body speaks, Vocal variety, Research your topic, Get comfortable with visual aids, Persuade with power, Inspire your audience.

What type of people join toastmasters?

Toastmasters is for everyone! Our ages range from mid 20's to mid 60's and include a wide range of professions.

How is Toastmasters more beneficial than other forms of speaking improvement?

Toastmasters offers the opportunity to develop your skills in a safe supportive environment with positive constructive evaluations. Toastmasters delivers a high quality, hands-on educational experience.

2. Fee Schedule

Effective March 31st, 2007

NEW MEMBERS

$25.00 *Toastmasters International (registration, manuals)
$10.00**Club fees (name tag, membership pin)

* All first time members must pay this fee, plus any person who joins the club and who wishes to receive new manuals.
* "Dual", "Transfer", or "Reinstated" members do not pay this fee, unless they want new manuals.
** All new members of Early Edition Toastmasters pay this fee.

ALL MEMBERS

  • Semi-annual dues must be received by Toastmasters International (T.I.) by April 10th and by October 10th; and therefore members must pay their dues to the Club by March 25th and by September 25th.
  • Semi-annual dues are collected at the same time as Toastmasters International dues are collected.
  • Members can pay dues semi-annually or annually.

3. What are the 10 Top Tips for Successful Public Speaking?

1. Know your material.

Pick a topic you are interested. Know more about it than you include in your speech. Use personal stories and conversational language - that way you won't easily forget what to say.

2. Practice, Practice, Practice!

Rehearse out loud with all equipment you plan on using. Revise as necessary.

3. Know the audience.

Greet some of the audience members as they arrive. It's easier to speak to a group of friends than to strangers.

4. Know the room.

Arrive early, walk around the speaking area and practice using the microphone and any visual aids.

5. Relax.

Imagine yourself speaking , your voice loud, clear and confident. Visualize the audience clapping - it will boost your confidence.

6. Visualize your self giving your speech.

7. Realize that people want you to succeed.

Audiences want you to be interesting, stimulating, informative and entertaining. They don't want you to fail.

8. Don't apologize

For any nervousness or problem - the audience probably never noticed it.

9. Concentrate on the message - not the medium.

Focus your attention away from your own anxieties and concentrate on your message and your audience.

10. Gain experience.

Experience builds confidence, which is the key to effective speaking. A Toastmasters club an provide the experience you need in a sage and friendly environment.
